Zig Zag

2021.

An industrial design project. A merging of an organic aesthetic with the domestic.

Germination is central to sustaining life on Earth, and yet there is a general lack of knowledge around what it is and how to provide the conditions for it to occur.

ZIG ZAG was designed with this in mind. It creates a space for those who wish to become more intimate with their relationship to plants and with their understanding of one of Nature’s most vital functions. It includes learning material but is intentionally non-automated, such that it forces the user to learn the skills to nurture a seed throughout its germination process and into its phase as a young plant.

Witness a seed germinate and the emergence of embryonic tissues. Observe the first appearance of chlorophyll and come to understand the difference between an embryonic leaf and a true leaf. With this hands-on learning comes empowerment and a connection to something that many are far too removed from. With this empowerment and connection comes a greater resiliency within our food systems and, hopefully, a greater respect and gratitude for the natural systems that sustain Us.

Designed in collaboration with Jesse Rudiger, (Forge 53); form and concept by Jonathan Luckhurst; metal sidewall support-system and transition to wood designed by Jesse Rudiger, Forge 53.
